Julius’ Bar

Originally located on Amos Street then Factory Street, it moved to its current home at Waverly Place and West 10th street in 1826. Around 1930, it gained the name “Julius” and became popular among sports figures and celebrities. It was around the 1960s when it attracted a diverse clientele including members of the LGBTQ+ community.

On April 21, 1966 a “Sip-in” was organized by the Mattachine Society to challenge discrimination and oppression against the gay community. Around that time, bars were not allowed to serve drinks to known or suspected gay men or lesbians. Julius’ bar was among the bars that wouldn’t serve gays because they had recently been raided. The refusal led to negative publicity on the New York Times.

The State Liquor Authority and the newly-empowered New York City Commission on Human rights changed its policies which birthed a more open gay bar culture. Since then, Julius’ has become a haven for its LGBTQ+ patrons. The Sip-in at Julius’ became a key event leading to the growth of legitimate gay bars.
